Whether you’re trying to grow your reach, find content, explore opportunities or recruit talent, LinkedIn is for many, the first and last stop. With well over 400+ million profiles exploring the depth of this powerful and time saving virtual meeting place will serve any business owner or entrepreneur well as you can easily build and manage a powerful network. But bear in mind whilst you are searching for your ideal audience and targeting potential prospects, millions of people can see your LinkedIn profile… right now! That’s why you don’t want your LinkedIn profile to diminish your professional flame.
If you’re going to do any kind of business development, prospecting or social selling on LinkedIn, the first thing you need to focus on is your LinkedIn profile. Below are the most common credibility-killing mistakes you can make on LinkedIn, which you should AVOID AT ALL COSTS:
Your Profile isn’t complete:
Not adding what you do and what you’re good at to your LinkedIn profile is decreasing your chances of attracting the best calibre prospects, and it’s seriously diminishing your brand and people’s confidence in your expertise. When I look at a LinkedIn profile, if I don’t get an instant picture of what you do for a living and what you’re good at, I move on. And I’m certainly not alone in that respect.
Using buzzwords in your profile:
The words you use in your profile could be working against you when it comes to standing out from the crowd and appearing higher on LinkedIn searches Buzzwords like Leadership, Creative, Strategic, Dedicated, Expert and Solution are some of the most common words used by business to brand themselves, but they are almost never searched for. When writing your headline, you should try to differentiate from your competitors, so my advice is to avoid using these words and use the words your customer searches for.
Your LinkedIn photo isn’t great (or missing altogether):
It’s hard to believe now, but when LinkedIn first launched, there wasn’t an option to upload a profile picture. You’d be amazed how a professional and welcoming photo humanises your LinkedIn presence..and a photo makes your profile more than 7 times more likely to be viewed.
Lack of character:
Thankfully, we can now add a header image to our LinkedIn profile page so visitors to your profile will get more of a sense of who you are and what you do. Make sure you have added one.
You have no LinkedIn activity:
Staying active on LinkedIn isn’t just about putting your content into the stream and driving traffic, it’s about establishing your reputation and authority on a given topic. It’s about demonstrating a willingness to share information that your followers might find helpful, (it’s about making sure that your presence on LinkedIn is active and engaged). Stay active on LinkedIn, work on it consistently.
You’re not recommended:
Recommendations are an extraordinarily powerful tool within LinkedIn, as they represent independent reviews of your business and can go a long way toward establishing your expertise with potential prospects. Display all of the recommendations you’ve received, and then take the time regularly to ask your satisfied customers and connections for recommendations.
Having an untidy URL:
If you’re going to do any kind of business development, prospecting or social selling on LinkedIn, the first thing you need to focus on is your LinkedIn profile. If your URL reads something like this; http://linkedin.com/pub/firstname-lastname435564-hjfjrigjhot Simply delete the extra numbers and letters. Now that you have a short and tidy URL, include this link in your email signature, business cards and any other material you hand out.
